Let’s journey back in time to around 400 AD, to discover its history before it became Diamond Head. During this time, Native Hawaiians settled into this area that was known as Lē‘ahi. This became a sacred site for rituals and worship and a national landmark for sailors. In the late 1800s, the Hawaiian Monarchy transformed Diamond head into a military defense wall, which would protect the island against invaders.

In the 19th century, British Sailors were exploring the vast Pacific ocean and suddenly saw a glittering hill in the distance. As they approached, they realized that the glittering hill was covered in “diamonds” shining in the sun! Little did those sailors know, that those “diamonds” were actually crystals of calcite, a mineral found in the volcanic rock. Thus, the name Diamond head became the common name for the crater.

Diamond Head is spectacular! I had the awesome experience of climbing to the top twice and it was just amazing! I probably couldn’t do it anymore now, but I am so happy I was lucky enough to do it in my younger days. So worth it!
